When to Get a Vision Exam?

For Children

The American Optometric Association recommends that preschool children receive a comprehensive eye exam at the ages of six months, three years, and five years. These years are a time for developing the visual abilities that a child will need in their lives.

As kids grow older in school, yearly evaluations are recommended to track the development of their vision and determine if any corrective or assistive eyewear is needed to improve their overall eye health.

For Adults

The American Optometric Association recommends a yearly eye exam for adults to detect and diagnose vision changes and maintain eye health. This is because most ocular diseases can be effectively treated with early detection.

For example, glaucoma is a disease caused by increased pressure in the eye, which is entirely asymptomatic until it causes irreversible vision changes.
